Motif Monday--Bright Wheel!
Bright Wheel Motif
The original motif (above) was worked in RED HEART Soft yarn, #9518 Teal and #9275 Paprika. We substituted the Paprika with #9779 Berry below. The outer points were formed by pinning the motif when blocking it.
Follow along with our step-by-step pictures and refer to the diagram at the bottom, as well. Some photos show the round partially completed, to make it easier to see how the stitches are worked into the previous round. The numbers at the end of each round (after a long dash) indicate how many stitches you should have after the round is completed. For example, after the first round is completed, there will be 14 double crochet stitches in the chain-4 ring.
This motif uses a special stitch in Round 2, the 3-treble cluster:
Beginning 3-tr cl (beginning 3 treble crochet cluster) Ch 3 (counts as first tr), *yarn over twice, insert hook in stitch or space at base of ch-3, yarn over and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice; repeat from * once more, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
3-tr cl (3 treble crochet cluster) *Yarn over twice, insert hook in indicated st or sp, yarn over and draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice; repeat from * 2 more times, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
With Color A, ch 4; join with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1 (Right side) Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 13 dc in ring; join with sl st in 3rd ch beginning ch-3—14 dc.
Round 2 Work beginning 3-tr cl; [ch 5, sk next st, 3-tr cl in next st] 6 times, ch 5, sk last st; join with sl st in top of beginning 3-tr cl — 7 3-tr cl and 7 ch-5 sps. Fasten off. (photo above shows Round 2 partially worked, the photo below shows Round 2 completed).
Round 3 With right side facing, join Berry with sc in any 3-tr cl; *3 sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 1, sl st on Background, ch 1, 3 sc in same ch-5 sp**, sc in next 3-tr cl; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **; join with sl st in first sc—49 sc and 7 joined ch-sps. Fasten off. (photo below shows Round 3 completed.)
NOTE When blocking, place pins through the chain stitches in the middle of the chain-5 spaces to make points. In the Whimsy Blanket, these stitches are slip-stitched to the background. Block the motif by spraying it with water and pinning it out until dry to form the outer points. Hovering a steam iron over it for a few seconds will help it keep its shape.
This motif was originally featured in the Whimsy Blanket by Ellen Gormley.
