Sari Shawl Crochetalong!

When we first saw this shawl in the office, we fell in love. Marina and I both wanted one! Since we don't get to keep the samples (awwww!) we'll just have to make them. Since we know that lots of you want the Sari Shawl, too, we'll have a crochetalong!

The Sari Shawl is in our July/August 2012 issue, which is on sale as a single issue at our website and on digital platforms. If you haven't tried our digital editions, this is a great time to start. You get a free trial period with the magazine on your device! I've had a life-long love affair with the printed words, and magazines in particular, and I adore my digital subs.

Our yarn arrived today! Three balls of Catania Fine for each of us. I'm making mine in a deep, dark, eggplant purple; Marina will be making hers in black.

First tip! Although the pattern calls for an ordinary chain of 116, you may want to go with a Foundation Single Crochet chain. Happily, we have a how-to for it on our website. If you choose to go with a regular chain, try going up a hook size for the chain and then going back down to work--you'll find it much easier to get into the chain to stitch your first row of single crochet.

The SMC website has a store finder, to help you find the yarn locally.

Sari Shawl

Living in Ireland I find it difficult to match yarn weights in US patterns. This pattern was so beautiful though I had to give it a try. I used a 2.5 mm hook and 4 ply lime green cotton yard. I was so delighted with the result that I've just started another in navy.

So happy to hear that you found a solution. Do you have a photo of your project? We'd love to see it in lime green!

Shari Shawl

finished mine in the red, went to show it to my best friend, she "borrowed' she wore a beautiful white halter dress with it f
and I have not seen it since lol. I knew I should have snapped a picture. Going to make another one in red again, though the orange looked like a nice shade.

Hope she brings your shawl back! :)

Told her she may keep it, the color looks so good on her. I enjoyed making it and plan on making another one, maybe in a slightly heavier yarn for the Holidays, not sure it will work up.

I'm making mine in red too.

I'm making mine in red too.  How was the blocking?  Did you use wires and pins or only pins?

Wires or pins

Hi Becky!

Pins may be the best way to block this, as it has a curvy border and not a straight one. Let us know what you decide!

I'm at row 95

How is everyone doing?  I love the way it looks right now and am beginning to wonder how I'm going. To block it when I finish.  Has anyone started blocking?

the pattern reads the yarn as a size that correct?? for a Fine yarn and a B hook?? I'm cornfused :S help! was thinking of using Grace cotton yarn....hmmmm

No, it's size 1

Hi Carrie! The yarn we call for is Catania Fine, a very lightweight cotton. Good catch! If you work with a thicker yarn, you may want to narrow the pattern to get the size shawl or scarf that you'd like. Please let us know how it works out!
